Copyright protects your original work from being used without consent.

For something to be copyrightable it must pass 3 requirements. 

  1. It must be saved. For example, you can copyright a video of your live performance because it's saved on a computer. But, you can't copyright the performance if there is no video.
  2. It must be real, not an idea. Basically, you can't copyright an idea. Idea protection is for patents. You must have turned your idea into a real thing, such as a painting. 
  3. It must be original. You can't copyright someone else's work. Your work has to be creative.
